Ways employers are trying to make sure they attract and retain qualified employees

We’ve analyzed the data to give you eight ways employers are trying to make sure they attract and retain qualified employees – that is, ways they can find you (the qualified candidate), get you to accept a job offer, and grow you into a dedicated, hard-working employee who will be an asset for the long-term.

No. 1: Bigger Paychecks
Continuing an existing trend designed to attract and keep top talent, employers plan to offer more lucrative compensation packages in the coming year. Eighty percent of employers report their companies will increase salaries for existing employees in 2008, similar to last year; and 56 percent of employers expect to increase salaries on initial offers to new employees, up from 49 percent in 2007.

What you can do: Do your homework and brush up your negotiation skills when you are ready to talk salary.

No. 2: More Flexible Work Arrangements
Sixty percent of employers report they currently offer flexible schedules to employees and 39 percent plan to provide more flexible work arrangements in 2008 such as: alternate schedules (come in early and leave early or come in later and leave later); compressed workweeks (work the same hours, but in fewer days); telecommuting options; summer hours; job sharing; and sabbaticals.

What you can do: If your salary offer isn’t as high as you hoped or your employer can’t give you a raise, perhaps you can negotiate a flexible schedule, saving you commuting time and transportation costs.

No. 3: Screening Candidates via the Internet
To ensure they are recruiting the right talent, more employers are leveraging the Internet as a vehicle for screening potential employees. Forty-five percent of employers report they use online search engines and social networking sites to research job candidates and 19 percent say they are likely to start using or increase their use of these resources to research job candidates in 2008.

What you can do: Make sure there’s nothing in cyberspace you wouldn’t want a potential employer to see. Do an online search of your name. Check your pictures on Facebook and MySpace.

No. 4: Rehiring Retirees
Nearly 30 percent of employers say they are concerned over the loss of intellectual capital at their organizations as a large number of Baby Boomers approach retirement age. Twenty-one percent say they are likely to rehire retirees from other companies in 2008. Another 14 percent plan to provide incentives for workers at or approaching retirement age to stay on with the company longer.

What you can do: If you are nearing or at retirement age but want to keep working, make sure your skills are up-to-date and learn which skills are easily transferred to different roles.

No. 5: Diversity Recruitment
When asked if there is a particular segment of diverse workers they plan to target more aggressively in 2008, employers pointed to Hispanic workers, women, African American workers and mature workers. Almost half of employers said, in addition to English, Spanish is the most important language for bilingual hiring.

What you can do: Make sure to highlight your diversity or language fluency. Search sites tailored to diversity hiring like EmpleosCB.com and CBAAnetowork.com.

No. 6: Freelance or Contract Hiring
Employers are turning to freelance or contract workers to help support business initiatives as they monitor their pace in recruiting permanent employees. Thirty-one percent of employers anticipate working with freelancers or contractors in 2008.

What you can do: Search job boards using keywords like “freelance” and “contract.” Put your résumé on freelance-specific sites like Sologig.com.

No. 7: More Comprehensive Healthcare Benefits and Special Perks
In light of rising healthcare costs, 19 percent of employers report their companies plan to offer more comprehensive or better health benefits to employees in 2008. One-in-ten employers plan to offer more perks such as bonuses, discounts, company cars, stock options, free childcare, educational reimbursement, transit passes and wellness programs.

What you can do: Keep your benefits package in mind when you are weighing a job offer. Calculate the worth of the benefits available to you and take advantage of as much as you can so you don’t leave any money on the table.

No. 8: Career Advancement
Employers are taking action to carve out career paths for employees. One-in-four employers (26 percent) plan to provide more promotions and career advancement opportunities in 2008.

What you can do: Ask about tuition reimbursement and training opportunities. Ask the hiring manager how he or she sees where role will lead in five, 10 and 20 years.

Job Search Tips Heres How To Find The Best Job Online

More Keywords
Use specific terms to describe exactly what you’re looking for. More general terms will give a larger number of results, so try to narrow your search. For example, try sales representative instead of sales.

Excluding Words
To exclude words, type a minus sign - in front of them. No jobs containing those words will show up in your results. For example, if you want to see marketing jobs with no mention of sales search for marketing -sales.

Word Order
To search for an exact phrase, just put quotation marks around two or more words. For example, search on “administrative assistant” (typing the quotation marks into the box).

Related Searches
We’ll make some suggestions too. If job titles you’ve entered have a similar title, links to related searches will appear under Related Job Titles at the top of your results page.

MONSTER JOB MONSTER HEADACHE SIGNS THAT YOU HATE YOUR CAREER

Dissatisfaction on the job is common and often temporary. But not many people take time to job miserable, and how to fix it.

"A miserable job makes a person cynical and frustrated and demoralized when they go home at night," Lencioni says. "It drains them of their energy, their enthusiasm, and self-esteem. Miserable jobs can be found in every industry and at every level."

Managers, who are a key factor in the job satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) of their employees. A recent Yahoo! HotJobs survey points to a similar conclusion: 43% of workers said discontent with their boss was the main reason they planned to look for a new job in 2008.

3 SIGNS THAT THAT YOU HATE YOUR JOB

Anonymity: Employees feel anonymous when their manager has little interest in them as people with unique lives, aspirations, and interests.

Irrelevance: This condition occurs when workers cannot see how their job makes a difference. "Every employee needs to know that the work they do impacts someone's life -- a customer, a coworker, even a supervisor -- in one way or another."

Immeasurement: This term describes the inability of employees to assess for themselves their contributions or success. As a result they often rely on the opinions of others -- usually the manager -- to measure their success.

Three Remedies for Job Misery

Three steps to improve the boss-employee dynamic and enhance job satisfaction.
1. Assess your manager. Is the boss interested in and capable of addressing the three factors mentioned above? "Most managers really do want to improve, in spite of the fact that they may seem disinterested or too busy," Lencioni says.

2. Help your manager understand what you need. This could mean reviewing with your manager what the key measurements for success are for your job. Lencioni also suggests asking your boss, "Can you help me understand why this work I'm doing makes a difference to someone?"

3. Act more like the manager you want. "Employees who take a greater interest in the lives of their managers are bound to infect them with the same kind of human interest they seek," the author says. Or find ways to let your manager know how his or her performance makes a positive difference for you.

Be Realistic

The founder of Career Advantage Solutions, agrees that "managing up" is a good way to improve job satisfaction, but he cautions employees to be realistic in their expectations.

"Managers are not mind readers," he says. "Take the responsibility to communicate upon yourself, and remember there has to be an ongoing dialogue, or change is unlikely to happen."

Over 50 Job Seekers Advice And Tips

Tips for the Over-50 Job Seeker
Kate Lorenz, CareerBuilder.com Editor

Milton Berle once joked "youth is the first 50 years of your life, and the first 19 of everybody else's!" Whenever youth officially ends is anybody's guess. But, if you're over 50 and searching for a job, you may feel like the rules have changed.

This is the age of downsizing and corporate cost cutting. If you've found yourself out the door in favor of younger and lower-paid employees, you may be asking yourself, "Have I reached my expiration date? Is this the beginning of the end?" Read THe Whole Article At NYNURSECAREER

What Questions Should You Ask During Your Interview

The Best Questions to Ask in the Interview
Kate Lorenz, CareerBuilder.com Editor

An interview is meant to be a two-way street. The hiring manager is interviewing you to determine whether you're the best fit for the job. At the same time, you should be asking questions to determine whether you would be happy in the position or with the company.

But once nerves take over, it's easy to forget your role. After all, you're meeting on the employer's schedule in an unfamiliar office. After listening to the interviewer's monologue about the company and role, you're asked a barrage of questions about your background and future plans " all the while praying that you're delivering the "right" answers.
By the time the employer asks if you have any questions, it's easy to be so drained and nervous you can only stammer out, "Nope."

Not asking questions, however, is passing up a chance to stand out from the competition.

"This is a great opportunity to set you apart in a positive way from other people being considered for the job," says Eddie Payne, division manager of professional staffing for recruiting firm FGP International. "Employers say they are interested in candidates who ask quality questions and make intelligent conversation based on what they know about the organization."

Before the interview, prepare a list of questions that demonstrate your knowledge of the company and interest in the position. Some good topics to cover include:

10 Trabajos Que No Requieren Mucha Experiencia

10 Trabajos Que No Requieren Mucha Experiencia

Defínete a ti mismo y tu mensaje

What Is The Toughest Question in the Interview

"Tell Me About Yourself"
The Toughest Question in the Interview
Don Straits, CEO and Dragon Slayer, Corporate Warriors

When you, as a job seeker, are asked the most common, and toughest, interview question, "Tell me about yourself," your answer can make or break you as a candidate. Usually job seekers will respond with their "30 second commercial," and then elaborate on their background. While almost every career book and career counselor will tell you that is the appropriate response, I totally disagree.

Many people fail in their job search because they are too often focused on what they want in a job including industry, type of position, location, income, benefits, and work environment. Their "30 second commercial" is centered around this premise. The commercial describes the job seeker's career history and what they are looking for. Too often, this is in direct contrast to what employers are looking for.

There are two dominant reasons why job seekers are successful in the job search. The first is focusing on the needs of the organization. The second is focusing on the needs of the people within that organization. In this article, we are going to examine how to focus on the needs of the people within organizations. This will assist in rethinking your response to that all-important question, "Tell me about yourself." Read The Whole Article

Six Figure Jobs Top Paying Jobs, Jobs That Pay Really Well

Six Figure Jobs
No M.D., No J.D., No Problem!
CareerBuilder.com

As we each search for our personal pot of gold, many of us wonder whether the rainbow leading us to a six-figure paycheck has to be so long. We want financially rewarding jobs, but not everyone is eager to commit the time and money necessary to complete a medical or law degree.

The good news is that, even though statistics have shown that more education translates to higher earnings, there are still plenty of six-figure salary jobs for those of us who have decided not to take the seven-years-and-a-stethoscope route. The following is a list of seven lucrative fields in which the top-earning 25 percent of workers take home more than $100,000 annually, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That percentage proves there is real potential for sizeable salaries within these fields, even if your résumé doesn't boast a lengthy list of alma maters.

Though some of these positions are filled by people with graduate degrees, a bachelor's degree and a little initiative could get you well on your way to a six-figure salary.

Sales Managers

Salary of top 25 percent: $127,820*

Median salary: $87,580 What they do: Sales managers establish company or team sales goals and coordinate training programs for sales representatives. They monitor sales statistics and customer satisfaction, and make adjustments to sales strategies as needed.

How to get the job: The educational background of sales managers varies. Managers frequently work their way up the ranks of a company -- often starting as sales representatives -- and many companies have established management training programs.

Securities, Commodities, and Financial Services Sales Agents

Salary of top 25 percent: $123,910

Median salary: $67,130 What they do: Securities, commodities and financial services sales agents buy and sell stocks, bonds and other financial products. They may also inform clients about financial markets and counsel them regarding their financial portfolios.

How to get the job: The majority of financial sales agents have college educations, and have taken courses in business, economics and finance. Securities and commodities agents must pass state licensing examinations, and many firms require agents to complete in-house training programs.

Financial Managers

Salary of top 25 percent: $118,150

Median salary: $86,280

What they do: Financial managers' responsibilities vary, but they generally oversee the preparation of financial reports involved with accounting, investing, banking, insurance and securities. They can also develop financial strategies for their organizations.

How to get the job: Employers expect financial managers to have a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics or business administration, and increasingly expect a master's degree in one of these fields as well. Depending on the company and the specific position, professional certifications such as the Chartered Financial Analyst designation may also be required.

Computer and Information Scientists, Research

Salary of top 25 percent: $113,830

Median salary: $91,230

What they do: Computer and information scientists act as theorists, designers or inventors while developing solutions to computer hardware and software problems and researching computer technology.

How to get the job: A bachelor's degree is usually a prerequisite for filling these positions, with most of the more technically complex jobs reserved for workers with graduate degrees.

Actuaries

Salary of top 25 percent: $112,360

Median salary: $81,640
