How To Start Your Job Search

Focus Your Search Criteria

When conducting a job search for a specific type of position, it's important to focus your search criteria on the career field and/or industry where you want to work.

On some job search sites, you will be able to start by using a pulldown menu to find listings in a specific job category. For example, on Ny NUrse Career, you can choose from many categories, like Accounting, Engineering, Finance and Publishing, just to list a few.

You can then enter a keyword to refine your search even further. Use the keyword search to find the specific type of position you are looking for, for example, human resources assistant, C++ programmer, nurse, etc.

It makes sense to start your search as specifically as possible, because that way you will find the jobs that most closely match your interests, skills and experience.

Broaden Your Job Search

If you don't find enough listings in your career field of interest, broaden your search to include a greater selection of job postings.

You can do this by making your keyword search more general. For example, use human resources instead of human resources assistant or programmer instead of C++ programmer to get a broader range of results when you search.
When you want to work in a specific location, you can refine your search even further by using local job search resources.

Be sure to check your local newspaper's help wanted ads, as well. Some employers only advertise on a local level.

Use Niche Jobs Sites

It's also a good idea to use sites that focus on a specific type of job and the job search engines:
